As the most visual of the big social media platforms, Instagram is a fantastic place for professional and amateur photographers to show their work off to the world.

If you currently take photos for a living, or are just starting out as a photographer, and you’re not on Instagram, you could be missing out on a tonne of exposure. A lack of familiarity with the platform might mean you don’t know where to start, so we’ve put together a simple guide to help photographers get up and running on Instagram Marketing.

Simple Post, Story + Reel Scheduling ✨

Visually plan your social content. Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn + Pinterest

Contents
1. Getting started
2. What to post
3. Growing your following
4. Wrapping up

1. Getting started

The first thing to do is set up your new Instagram account! Instagram is mobile-first, meaning you’ll need the app in order to get the most out of the platform, so head to your phone’s app store and get downloading.

If you’ve already got a personal Instagram account, you need to decide whether you want to have an entirely separate profile for your photography business or hobby, or if you’re happy to combine the two. As Instagram now has multi-account support, it’s easy to add multiple profiles to your app and manage these in tandem.

It’s a good idea to make sure people know how to contact you for more information, especially if your work or skills are available for purchase – if you’ve got your own website, you can include a link to this in your profile, or you could simply pop your email address in your bio.

Speaking of your bio – keep it short and sweet, but make sure people know who you are and what you do. The prolific photographer Simone Bramante has done this particularly well:

 Simone Bramante - Instagram Photographer

2. What to post

Instagram shouldn’t be a carbon copy of your website or portfolio; think of it more as a way to show the world your own unique style and personality. Try and strike a balance between exceptional shots that demonstrate your ability, and more ad-hoc phone photos that offer an insight into your process – a bit like a visual diary! You can also use Instagram to experiment with different styles and get some feedback from your followers.

Uploading from your DSLR

Although phone cameras have come a long way in the past few years, most serious photographers still remain loyal to their DSLR. Instagramming photos taken on a camera isn’t as easy as uploading from your phone, but it can certainly be worth the additional effort. This can be especially true for event photographers, who’ll use their DSLR for the majority of their work, and would have a pretty empty Instagram account otherwise.

If you want to use your DSLR photos on Instagram, it’s worth investing in a bit of extra tech to make the process easier. Ideally, you want to get your photos from your camera to your phone directly, thus cutting out the middleman (your computer). This can be achieved relatively easily with a wi-fi enabled memory card, a wireless camera adapter, or (if you’ve got an iPhone), a Lightning to USB adapter. Once the photos are on your phone, it’s just a simple matter of uploading them to Instagram using the app.

Editing

If you’re the type of person who normally spends hours and hours editing photos, you might want to rein in your perfectionist side. Your Instagram account, unlike your portfolio, doesn’t need to be full of pixel-perfect photos for two reasons:

1. Most people viewing your Instagram photos will be doing so on their mobiles, where screen size and resolution will mean many of the finest details of your images simply aren’t visible.

2. People understand that Instagram is, by its nature, very ad-hoc and of-the-moment – they won’t expect every single one of your images to be the final product.

A bit of colour correction and cropping is fine and there are plenty of great phone apps (check out out 5 best photo editing apps list) but don’t put too much pressure on yourself!

To filter or not to filter?

Instagram’s wide range filters are completely adequate for most users, and being able to edit the levels of these certainly makes it easy to tweak your images until you’re happy. However, as a serious photographer, it’s likely that you have your own technique and style already. Using filters is fine (after all, it’s your Instagram account and you can do what you want), but you may get closer to the result you’re after by using your own preferred software, or experimenting with the various editing apps on offer until you find one that’s perfect for you.

Inspiration

It’s a good idea to follow a few photographers who are already making a name for themselves, such as natural-world specialist Janske Kaethoven

https://www.instagram.com/p/BIC9DaPgK4E/

…award-winning photojournalist David Guttenfelder

https://www.instagram.com/p/3AivzCAwyt

…and Dirk Bakker, who is particularly talented when it comes to capturing the beauty in manmade structures:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BM3vxahBVbu/

Keeping up with some of your favourite artists not only helps you learn how the pros are using Instagram, it can also provide inspiration by the bucketload.

3. Growing your following

Once you’re comfortable with Instagram, it’s a good idea to turn your attention to growing your following – especially if photography is your main source of income, as more followers = more potential customers. Popular Instagram accounts will also attract the attention of big companies like Getty, Associated Press, and National Geographic, who may be on the lookout for new talent.

So how can you make sure it’s not just your friends and family liking your photos?

Hashtags

Using hashtags is a tried and tested way of making sure your photos are seen by interested Instagrammers. It’s important to do your research and find the right hashtags for your photos, as using inappropriate hashtags can be a huge faux pas. To get an idea of what hashtags might be lucrative for you, take a look at what your photography peers are using.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bhz0NIIAJUG/

Hashtags are also a great way to keep up with Instagram trends and finding competitions you could potentially enter. These generally involve posting a photo that matches a certain theme, and adding the appropriate hashtag; this may lead to your photo being reposted, potentially resulting in your work being seen by thousands more people.

Grow Your Audience With #Hashtags

Discover better hashtags to reach the more people, grow your follower count and get more engagement on your posts.

Get involved

Follow people whose Instagram accounts inspire you, and don’t just limit this to the most popular posters – by searching hashtags yourself, you can find other photographers who are interested in the same subjects, techniques, and technology as you.

Once you start using Instagram to interact with other photography accounts, the app will begin to understand where your interests lie, and will therefore populate the Explore tab with photos it thinks you’ll appreciate – this is another great way to find new accounts to follow.

Engaging with your fellow creatives by commenting on their images and starting a conversation will introduce your work to more people, and you might make some friends in the process! You may even be able to find a local community that you can become part of, to the benefit of everyone involved.

Post regularly

This one’s pretty simple: the more you post, the more chance your work will be seen by people! By posting regularly you’ll also get much more of a ‘feel’ for Instagram, which will lead to you being able to use it as effectively as possible.

A photographer’s job involves a lot of travel and this prevents you from publishing on Instagram regularly. It is a good idea to set up a content calendar and schedule all your Instagram posts in advance so that you do not have to manually publish them on by one.

In any case, make sure you engage with your audience regularly in the comments since this plays a vital role in converting leads.

Hopper can help you post regularly by enabling you to schedule your Instagram posts, and it includes a wealth of editing tools to make sure your photos are exactly right. You can try Hopper free for 14 days so you can get a taste of how powerful it is!

4. Wrapping up

If you’re not already on Instagram, we really hope this guide gave you some food for thought. We’d love to see how you get on, so feel free to pop your Instagram handle in the comments below so we can check out your work.

Instagram is a natural hub for photographers to showcase their work, as well as connect with both potential customers and fellow photographers.

Here are 6 tips for Instagram photographers to help build their profile and increase engagement…

1. Create A Unique Style

Perhaps one of the most important tips on our list is to create your own style. Get creative and be unique in your style of photography.

With the sheer volume of photographers on Instagram, your aim should be to stand out from the crowd. Some of the biggest photographers on Instagram gained their popularity due to their individual creative flair. Take @muradosman for example, his unique “follow me” style of photography catapulted him into Insta fame, and his unique style soon became a trend that is cemented among many budding photographers today:

2. Post Production

Editing your photographs to perfection will take you a very long way. A simple image can be dramatically transformed into a stunning piece of photography using basic editing tools, Lightroom presets, and Photoshop.

Having a consistent post-production style on Instagram will give your feed a cohesive aesthetic (more on this in the next section), and your audience will become accustomed to your style of photography.

Many Instagram photographers have started selling their presets to their audience as an additional income source, with large accounts even setting up separate profiles for their presets:

3. Build An Aesthetic

An Instagram aesthetic is the overall look and feel of your Instagram profile. Creating an aesthetic requires thinking about how your Instagram posts look when placed next to one another in the grid feed, rather than only as individual posts.

Generally speaking, feeds with an aesthetic tend to get better engagement. The style is recognisable, and new users are likely to stay on the profile for longer and click follow. There are a number of Instagram themes you can create to give your feed an edge, but photographers predominantly go for a consistent style of editing and/or composition.

Whether its presets, or flat-lay photography, or borders that create a collage effect, the creative possibilities with Instagram aesthetics are endless. Check out these Instagram themes for some inspiration!

Consistent flat lay photography can create a striking Instagram theme.

In order to create an Instagram aesthetic like this, you need to plan in advance so you know what your feed will look like once your posts are published. Using Hopper HQ’s Instagram grid planner, you can perfect your feed aesthetic and make sure no posts clash.

4. Hashtag, Hashtag, Hashtag

Hashtags are fundamental in increasing the reach of your Instagram posts, and when it comes to photography there is an entire micro network of hashtags you can use, to give your photography the exposure it truly deserves.

Hashtags also give you the chance to be featured on huge photography accounts on Instagram, some of which have millions of followers. This will no doubt help you get noticed and increase the reach of your work.

5. Connect & Collaborate

The photography community on Instagram is massive, and a great way to connect with the community is to collaborate with other photographers in your locality.

Collaborating with other photographers will not only support you on your creative journey, but also help you get your name/brand out there.

If you search around on Instagram you will often times find photography accounts that host Insta-meets, a opportunity for you to meet other photographers in your city and get creating.

Plan & schedule social media ahead of time.

> Video, gallery & image posts
> Calendar, feed & grid preview
> Instagram, Facebook & Twitter

6. Be Consistent

As with most things in life, consistency is key. Hone your skills, perfect your craft and stick at it.

The photography sphere is a limitless playground for creatives. Try new set ups, new locations and different compositions to keep your photography fresh.

If you’re new on your photography journey, it may be disheartening to not see immediate results in the form of Instagram likes or followers. The best advice is to stay consistent and post regularly.

Use an Instagram scheduler like Hopper HQ to plan ahead and post accordingly, not to bombard your followers with images from your shoot all at once.

Photography hashtags are very useful in making your content more discoverable and increasing the reach and engagement on your profile.

For photographers and influencers who are looking to share their work and grow a following on Instagram, it’s important to know which hashtags to use. Granted you hashtag correctly, you should see an increase in both likes and followers!

However, it can sometimes be difficult to make yourself stand out amidst the millions of pictures uploaded daily. Hashtagging is therefore fundamental in drawing an audience and gaining exposure for your work – it can boost your presence on Instagram and in the photography world!

So the key question arises, what are the best photography hashtags to use?

It truly depends on your content and style of photography, but we’ve outlined the top hashtags for a range of popular photography niches below…

There are dozens of Instagram accounts dedicated to the photography community, each within its own niche — street photography, travel, nature, portrait etc — all of which have community hub photography hashtags.

This creates an incredible micro-platform to take advantage of to give your photography a boost. Find a community account on Instagram that suits your photography style, follow the page, include the relevant photography hashtags, and reap the rewards!

Naturally, you should see a huge increase in engagement from those searching and using the hashtag, great for connecting with other photographers and growing quality followers.

Plus, if you do manage to secure a feature on the community account, you’ll gain exposure to tens of thousands of users who follow the account!

Instagram is more popular than ever and editing photos to perfection has become fundamental to make your profile stand out.

While any photographer will undoubtedly spend hours researching the best camera model and Fuji lenses, it’s also good to know the high quality mobile apps that are available to edit your photos on the go.

Here are the five of the best photo editing apps we’ve found to help boost your Instagram feed…

Hey, did you know that Hopper HQ has a beautiful image editor built into our Instagram scheduling app? We wrote about this in our  Hootsuite Vs. Buffer comparison article since this feature does not exist on either of them.

You can easily edit your photos before posting them on your Instagram right from your computer. That’s right!

Snapseed (Android & iOS)

First and foremost my personal favourite and go-to app for all of my photography edits, Snapseed. Available on both iOS and Android, Snapseed offers professional level photo editing with an intuitive interface that’s simple to use but doesn’t compromise on functionality.

Featuring dozens of tools to modify and edit your images, with all the standard adjustable settings from brightness to highlights. Snapseed also has advanced brush tools to precisely adjust specific areas of your photographs. Perhaps you want to saturate those red sneakers or sharpen the details in the skyscrapers, Snapseed can do it. You can truly transform your photographs and give them a professional finish. Also available is a wide array of filters, lens blur, HDR and healing settings.

Snapseed offers a versatile photo editing app for mobile, my personal first choice to edit photographs before they’re uploaded to Instagram and best of all it’s free!

VSCO (Android & iOS)

A hugely popular photo editing app amongst Instagram users, VSCO is more than just photo editing, it offers a community for photographers to connect and create. Simply searching the Hashtag #VSCO on Instagram will reveal the huge community of photographers and casual users that use VSCO every day, a testament to the app’s popularity.

VSCO houses all the tools you’d expect from a favourable photo editing app; saturation, highlights, temperature and vignette can all be adjusted alongside many other settings. VSCO also offers a built in camera with advanced controls, allowing you to capture the perfect shot, edit and save, all without leaving the app, an A for convenience. Filters are also a huge feature for VSCO, with the option to buy filter packs each with their own distinctive styles and tones, very popular amongst users of the app.

VSCO offers a unique user experience, encompassing the creative energy of photography, a sleek interface and a huge community of photographers to connect and create with. Highly recommended for those wanting evolve their Instagram to the next level.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom (Android & iOS)

Adobe’s suite of photography software has cemented itself overtime as one of the best on the market, and is a staple for many professional photographers. It’s no surprise then to see an Adobe mobile app make the list.

This entry on our list is probably more suited to those who have a real passion for photography and want an editing app that provides advanced editing functionality on the go. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom provides a lightweight adaptation of what you will find on the desktop version, allowing you to truly transform standard mobile images into stunning works of photography. The app comes stacked with tons of tools giving you the ability to change almost every single detail in an image, and of course preset filters are readily available. The app also houses a built in camera, with a pro mode that gives you control over settings such as Shutter Speed, White Balance and ISO. One of the unique features of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is the Creative Cloud Photography plan, essentially a monthly subscription with Adobe, providing benefits such as; access your media anywhere, sync photo edits across all devices, Photoshop CC and much more.

The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom app is a must have for those who take the art of photography seriously, or even for those who want to learn more about photo editing. Simply playing around with the app for a few hours and you’ll pick up new skills and techniques to up your photography game.

Instasize (Android & iOS)

Are you a social creative with Instagram as one of your primary outlets for self-expression? Instasize is the app for you, available on both iOS and Android app stores. A multipurpose video and image editor, It has all the basic features needed to create a great Instagram post from scratch.

Features include filters and setting sliders for post-processing alongside text and borders for final polishing. It also has a set of beauty tools available to quickly touch up personal portraits and selfies before you upload them.

Plus, regular updates to the platform provide new content themed around seasons, locations, and moods. For users aiming for their ideal aesthetic, this makes it easier to look for the pegs you want. All its basic features are usable whether you’re editing a photo or video, too, making it easy to whip out when you need to create something quickly and efficiently. The convenience makes Instasize a great fit for creatives on the go.

Afterlight (Android, iOS & Windows 10)

The only paid app on our list, Afterlight definitely earns its keep. The quality and simplicity of the app makes it a joy to use and the functionality is also second to none. Afterlight comes built in with all the standard editing tools you’d expect from a high calibre app; Saturation, Contrast, Exposure and even RBG Shadow tones can be adjusted, but thats not all.

Afterlight really shines (pun not intended!) when it comes to filters, the app offers dozens and dozens of filters that offer a different aesthetic appeal than what is found as standard on Instagram, you can stack filters and add a variety of frames. This combined with the fine editing tools and the ability to export photos in high resolution, can really make for beautiful compositions. One of my favourite features on Afterlight is the textured filters, in particular the light leaks. The filters very high quality and used on the right photo, it can make the light flares seem organic. Every filter and effect in Afterlight is fully adjustable giving you complete control over the final production.
If you want your Instagram pictures to stand out from the rest, Afterlight is definitely worth the $0.99 app store price.

The climax of sharing a new photo with your followers can often become flummoxed by the numerous Instagram filters available.

If you’re using a professional camera with an optimum lens, instead of a smart phone, you may be tempted to go nakedly filterless. the hashtag #nofilter is a proud and popular way many instagrammers choose to get noticed. Adding a filter to an already beautiful piece of art can take its beauty away, so refrain from using a filter if you’re photo really would be better off without one.

When a follower scrolls down your Instagram account there should be a consistent theme of filters running through all your images. This is one factor many potential followers will look at before clicking the follow icon. If they see your photos meet an ongoing tone that flows throughout, they will find this more admirable in comparison to another Instagram account which is a mishmash of several tones and inconsistencies.

Your filter should blend in with your branding. Deciding which filter depends on your personal preference and individual style. Here are a few tips to take on board:

1. Outdoors & Nature

If you generally take images in natural light to contain greenery, there are a few filters which will further enhance the boldness and depth of the green to make it more lush and stand out. Experiment with Juno, Lo-Fi or X-Pro II and notice how the greenery becomes more remarkably imposing. The below contrasts are between Normal and Lo-Fi.

The below image of an entertainer in Covent Garden has been filtered using Clarendon. Notice how Clarendon’s green tones change the entire setting in comparison to Amaro’s warmer tones. Clarendon is still the preferred favourite.

2. Historical

Adding a hint of nostalgia to this old printing press at Winterbourne Gardens can be achieved with Aden, Nashville, Valencia or even plain black and white Inkwell. Of the three black and white filter options available, Inkwell definitely offers the most clarity. Willow will give you a grainier ageing effect offering defects with less sharpness for a dramatic 1800s result.

3. Food

Amaro and Clarendon do a great job at creating a flawless look where everything looks naturally perfect as if a lightbulb hangs from the ceiling (or sky). Food is best captured in an unbiased and appetising light using Clarendon. See how much more aesthetically glossier the image on the right looks than its unfiltered matt version on the left.

4. Earthy

Ludwig turns the dullness down one notch on your image so everything appears cloudier even on a  normal day. Other Instagram filters that achieve a similar effect to soften and shift the original palette of colours, include Slumber, Crema and Perpetua. For this particular example, we see the image of the pedal bus in London’s outdoor Borough Market, in Perpetua welcoming subtle green tones. Remember, images taken outdoors and indoors will achieve different effects even with the same filter.

5. Architecture

Unlike many filters that will lose your blue sky, the Skyline filter will keep your blue sky intact behind your buildings whilst enhancing the rest of the photo. Ludwig is an equal favourite to capture your European landmarks, as it captures light and dark in all the right spots.

IMG_9939

Once you’ve decided which filter is right for you, try to stick with that filter for all your images. It’s amazing how a filter can transform dull images into vibrant appealing images to entice new followers.

Discovered Exactly What You Want?

To hide filters from your menu, simply scroll right to the end of the filter choices and select Manage. You can uncheck the least favourites from the list and even order them in preference. Surprisingly you may discover old filter favourites that you hid years ago. If you have your heart set on one filter, then go ahead and uncheck all but that one.

If you’re using Hopper to schedule your posts in advance, the answer is yes, you can apply filters while your schedule. To edit your image (currently desktop only) select the blue “Edit Image” button to the right above your picture. From this editor you can make a range of changes to your picture using 25 different Instagram filters.
