Instagram does not inform users how many people have unfollowed them or who they are. There have been third-party tools that showed you unfollows (e.g. Unfollowgram) however due to Instagram’s new terms of use they have shut down. Some tools are still technically able to show you your unfollowers. These include CrowdfireInstafollow & Whofollow.

Do these unfollowing apps break Instagram’s terms of use?

On Instagram’s change in terms of use back in 2013 many third-party tools had to shut down. These tools did not adhere to the new standards and therefore were no longer able to continue. One example was Unfollowgram which had allowed users to see their unfollowers for a number years. While many tools that did adhere to these standards were able to continue, Unfollowgram was sadly not.

How about the Instagram unfollowing apps that are still running? Are they breaking Instagram terms of use? They very well could be. Their service is similar to Unfollowgram, their only difference is that they are mobile apps while the former was accessible on desktop. Where Unfollowgram has shut down, these apps have not (however some have experienced technical issues). We’d recommend using your own judgement when using these apps, if they appear to be a little shady then it might be worth staying clear.

What is Crowdfire?

Crowdfire homepage

Crowdfire is described as a social media engagement tool. Working exclusively with Instagram and Twitter it aims to make social media insights clearer and more helpful. It helps you figure out the social media updates that affect your follower/unfollower stats, find people not following you back and, most importantly, show you your recent unfollowers. If you’re looking to use these features you will need to upgrade to one of Crowdfire’s plans, starting at $9.99 all the way up to $199.99. Does it work? Well that’s where we saw a problem. Despite all our tests, Crowdfire wasn’t able to track new followers or unfollowers. This may be due to an unfortunate technical error, however as with all other apps be sure to eer on the side of caution.

What is Instafollow?instafollow app

Instafollow (called Followers For Instagram in the Apple store) is a mobile app for both Android and iOS that keeps a track of all your followers. You can check out ‘gained followers’ and most importantly ‘Lost followers’. Extra features include seeing your ‘Top Likers’, ‘Top Commenters’ and the mysteriously named ‘Secret Admirers’. Simple features are free but if you’re looking to add more than one account or see more advanced analytics, then you’ll have to commit to one of the in-app purchases.

What is Whofollow?

whofollow app

Similar to Instafollow, WhoUnfollow (full name WhoUnfollow for Instagram) allows you to see who’s unfollowed you on Instagram. It also shows you who you’re following and not getting a follow back from, as well as similar insights such as ‘Top Likers’ and ‘Top Commenters’. There has been reports of several technical issues with Whofollow, so it may be worth trying a more popular tool first.

Why should I track my Instagram Unfollowers?

Lots of effort goes into getting new Instagram followers, whether that be improving your photos, choosing the best time to post, or less honorable means. However when you lose a follower this can be the quickest way to find the significant problems in your social media efforts. You can reach out to your unfollowers, asking them why they decided to leave. Maybe it’s due to a change in your content, maybe it’s because you haven’t been posting enough lately (another reason to start scheduling your posts). If talking to new followers is a great way to learn your strengths, talking to new unfollowers is a great way to learn your weaknesses and find out why you’re being unfollowed.

Every day there seems to be a new Instagram update! It’s hard to keep up! We’ve taken a look at what’s been changing in the world of Instagram and how this affects brands, businesses and users. You’ve probably missed an update or two, so this is essential reading…

Unified inboxes for business

inbox

For many business, social media has become a big part of the customer service process. Not only can users express their thoughts to you in second, those opinions are there for the world to see. That’s why it’s important customer service representatives are up to date on messages sent to them, no matter the platform. Instagram and Facebook have now made that easier.

Business will now be able to access a unified Pages Manager inbox, allowing them to see and respond to messages on Facebook, Messenger and Instagram. Businesses will also find it easier to see users public social history, as well as if they’ve spoken before. This all helps social media managers answer queries in the best, most personable way.

This will change: how you conduct customer service and interact with users.

What does this mean? For customer service teams that use social media management tools to keep an eye on messages, this update may not be that useful. Why use one app to manage Facebook and Instagram messages and another for every other platform? But if you get a lot of interaction on Facebook and Instagram and want to stay on top of it, this will be a life-saver.

Links (!) and Mentions in Instagram Stories

Instagram stories 2

Is it time to say goodbye to the awful #linkinbio hashtag? Instagram users (with verified accounts) will now be able to add links directly into their Instagram Stories. Users can tap ‘See More’ to give more context to the story, and from there click a link to open a page in the Instagram app. This feature has been widely requested by brands to help turn their Instagram following into an effective traffic source. Non-verified accounts aren’t missing out either. Instagram Stories also allow tagging of other Instagrammers, allowing users to click and see the account of up to 10 users featured.

Instagram stories link

This will change: Make it easier to turn your Instagram following into traffic, sales, leads, etc.

What does this mean? If you’ve been struggling to turn your Instagram following into traffic to your site, this will be news to your ears. From brands trying to sell products to news outlets trying to get readers to an article of theirs, direct linking within Instagram  will definitely have a big impact on business.

Instagram for Shopping

shopping

More and more consumers are getting on board with Shopping on mobiles/tablets and Instagram are cashing in.

Instagram has announced a test phase of a new shopping feature. Qualifying posts will be able to have a ‘tap to view’ icon at the bottom of the photo, when tapped tags on up to 5 products will appear with info and prices. After selecting a tag you’ll be taken to a more detailed info page with a ‘shop now’ button taking you to the brand’s website.

Unlike Instagram’s other features, this is still very much in the test phase – currently only  available to handful of users in the U.S. with iOS devices. Instagram is looking to roll out this feature with more updates (adding product recommendations, changing how products are ‘showcased to shoppers’) to other countries soon.

Instagram Live

live

Facebook live video debuted back in April, in November Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom confirmed the feature will now be available on Instagram.

Rumours about the feature surfaced in October when users spotted an Live icon on certain Instagram Stories. According to screenshots obtained by Russian publication T. Journal the feature will work much in the same Facebook Live does. On the camera page, it seems a ‘Go Insta’ button will start a live broadcast. Unfortunately, there’s no details on when this will be rolled out.

live

This will change: According to the Independent, for Facebook Live ‘the aim of the game is to grow your number of followers’ – Instagram Live will likely offer the same.

What does this mean? Live video has jumped in popularity in recent months, like everything else it’s up to brands to keep up. Live video offers a new way for followers to interact with your brand, as well as attracting new followers.

Instagram and Mental Health

mentalhealthinstagram

Instagram is looking wider in what part in plays in the lives of social media users. A new anonymous reporting tool now lets people send an alert to Instagram if they are worried about a fellow user’s mental health.

The at risk user then gets a notification saying ‘someone saw one of your posts and thinks you might be going through a difficult time. If you need support, we’d like to help’. This then directs the user to a new support system which offers advice and contacts to professionals.

This isn’t the first time social media has played a part in the fight against mental health issues.  Back in February, Facebook launched a suicide prevention tool which also allowed users to submit anonymous reports of worrying social media behaviour (http://www.wired.co.uk/article/facebook-suicide-prevention)

What does this mean? With social media’s reach growing everyday, it’s comforting to see it playing a part in significant social issues. Instagram understanding this will help in continuing to portray the platform as an integral part of people’s lives.

And best for last, Boomerang

boomerang

You didn’t know you wanted it, but you’ve got it and you can’t stop. Boomerang is now an integrated feature to Instagram Stories. Simply by swiping right you can film in Boomerang mode, allowing you to create a videos of up to 5 photos played on a continuous loop. It’s a lot more fun that it sounds, we swear!

What is Instagram’s New Shopping Feature?

Instagram is testing a new shopping feature to give consumers more product information on posts, the feature will also allow a link where users can purchase the product for themselves. The feature is a step towards improving the selling experience for brands, making it easier to promote products and gain traffic to their site.

How will it work?

shopnow

Each post will have a tap to view icon at the bottom left of a photo. When tapped, a tag will appear on various products in the post—showcasing up to five products and their prices. Once a tag is selected a new detailed view of the product will open. This functionality will bring important product information to the consumer earlier in the journey, all without having to leave the Instagram app to search. Then, if the consumer taps the Shop Now link from the product details view, they’ll go directly to that product on the business’ website, making it easier for them to buy the product they want.

Why?

Instagram is well aware of the massive mobile potential of shopping online, as Instagram highlighted ‘84% of smartphone users in the US browse, research or compare products via a web browser or mobile app’ – this move is clearly a way to capitalise on that.

Instagram is also keen to include their e-commerce potential right into the app, allowing users to browse without leaving the platform.

According to an internal survey by Instagram, only 21% of purchases are completed within the first day. Knowing there are a lot of stages in the buying process, with information such as product descriptions and prices needed along the way, Instagram are hoping this new feature will help along that path.

How can I start using Instagram shopping?

Currently Instagram has limited the feature to a number of test accounts, who will be sharing these new feature posts in the coming weeks (See examples).

This initial phase will be limited to a group of people, who use iOS devices and are within the US.

The next phase will look at expanding the feature, adding product recommendations, changing how products are ‘showcased to shoppers’ and expanding to other countries other than the US. The ability for users to save posts so they can come back later to check product information or make a purchase is also a potential change.

What this means for brands?

Instagram has always positioned themselves as the place to discover trends and new products, now it’s trying to make it easier to follow that path to purchase.

This is already a path many users have made, the behaviour is already there. The only difference, brands would previously have to refer to their bio link, elaborately use hashtags or use a convoluted third party tool. This makes that path easier by including an easy to click link which can only help drive purchases.

This also a big step in the impulse purchase market, shortening the time between initial interest to checkout.

Another question that needs asking is, what does this mean for influencer marketing? There has a monumental shift towards influencer marketing recently – with 81% of marketers having used it previously. With more and more brands seeing the potential of influencers with huge, loyal followings promoting their products.

The main worry in the influencer space is tracking, how do you know the impact of what is essentially mass word-of-mouth. With the introduction of product information and links, traffic can be tracked and an influencers value seen clearly.

Obviously, it’s up to influencers whether this will be something they adopt. With the fine line between genuine promotion and advertising being a constant worry, the introduction of overt production information and links could put some people off.

It’s also yet to be seen if users will start shopping in-between their social media fix. While it makes it easier for people to buy brands’ products, we don’t know how much benefit brands and retailers will actually see.

The potential for other services?

What does this mean for subscription services, non-profits, etc.? Currently there isn’t any word on the boundaries the product must be within, as well as whether this will be moderated or how brands will apply the feature.

For non-profits that use campaigning and donations, it’s still to be seen whether they will be able to use this feature. A heavy focus is on product, the price, the information, etc. Donations and campaigning is obviously a little different, but we do see the potential in this new tagging feature for non-profits. Instagram wouldn’t want to alienate the massive non-profit sector of their member-base.

We don’t see much potential for subscription based services; principally because the pricing structure is a lot more complex. Instagram would likely want to distance itself from the complicated side of subscription services, making it as easy and straight-forward as possible for the users.

Instagram Shopping Examples

The new Instagram shopping tagging feature will be trialled by a small selection of accounts, with posts over the next few weeks.
