When is the best time to post on Instagram?

It is not easy to figure out when is the best time to post on Instagram for every day of the week. Many factors need to be taken into consideration, like your target audience, geography, cultural celebrations and more.

But we’ve curated a few data-based suggestions below:

Best time to post on Instagram on Monday:

The best time to post on Instagram on Monday is between 12 pm and 2 pm. It seems like most people on Mondays are motivated and focused on their work. Only being active on social media, which includes Instagram starting during their lunch break.

Best time to post on Instagram on Tuesday:

On Tuesdays, the best time to post seems to be earlier in the morning when users are commuting to work. After getting over the Monday blues, from 8 am to 10 am individuals spend less time stressed out providing space for some more leisure time.

Best time to post on Instagram on Wednesday:

Interestingly Wednesday seems to be the day when most users are active, especially later in the morning around 11 am. You may also notice more activity throughout working hours as people start getting tired of their week.

Best time to post on Instagram on Thursday:

Similar to Mondays, during lunch breaks would be the best time to post on Thursday. Starting from 12pm until about 2pm would be when most of your target audience is active. However, you need to take into consideration industry and age.

Best time to post on Instagram on Friday:

On Fridays compared to the other weekdays, it might make more sense to post closer to the end of the afternoon. Starting around 4pm until 7pm. Users are more likely to be online as their work week has ended and they cna start unwinding for their weekend.

Best time to post on Instagram on Saturday:

On Saturdays, it might sound non-intuitive but posting earlier in the morning could be the way to go! Between the window of 10 am to about 1 pm lunchtime, your posts can get higher engagement. As people sleep in or have slower mornings, it is more likely that they’d be on the gram.

Best time to post on Instagram on Sunday:

The best time to post on Instagram on Sunday would be closer to the evening starting at 5 pm to 7 pm. This is when users are prepping themselves for the coming week and would most likely spend their evenings at home or just relaxing.

Best time to post Reels on Instagram

We all know that each type of Instagram content serves its purpose. So, we can’t assume that all of them would be successful at the same time. When speaking about Instagram Reels, timing your post can make a substantial difference in maximizing engagement.

For this reason and backed with data, we believe that the best time to post Instagram Reels is during lunch hours 11 am to 2 pm, and evenings after 6 pm. However, remember that these times can vary depending on your target audience. This is why using an external tool like Hopper HQ can help.

Analyzing your Instagram Insights can provide a more tailored understanding of when your followers are most engaged. Remember, consistency in posting and quality of content also play a crucial role in the success of your Reels.

Best time to post Stories on Instagram

Instagram Stories is one of the most popular types of content shared on the platform. It allows you to keep your current following up-to-date with what you’re doing or even use them as reminders for events or to promote newly published posts.

Similar to Instagram Reels, the best time to post Stories is during lunch breaks, between 11 am and 2 pm.  Also, you may want to consider posting on weekends or Fridays as users tend to spend more time active on the app as well as gain a growing curiosity to see what their close network is up to.

Keep in mind that the impact of Stories varies depending on if your profile is an individual or a brand. Individuals would have more success on weekends compared to a brand.

How to find when to post on Instagram

There are two primary ways in which you can figure out the best time to point on Instagram. One way is by using the Instagram app and the other option is to use a social media management tool like Hopper HQ:

1) Using the Instagram app:

Instagram provides you with basic data on the best time to post, however, you’d need to have a business or creator account to see this.

  1. Open the app and head to your Instagram profile
  2. Click on the hamburger icon and select insights
  3. Select on the option “Total Followers” and scroll down
  4. On the bottom of the screen, you should see a graph similar to the one below.
Active time on Instagram

Unfortunately, even though Instagram has this graph available, it doesn’t provide any more details. Like for example, you won’t know how many users are active during each time frame. You’ll only be told that it’s the best time.

2) Using Hopper HQ:

Hopper HQ works out the best time to post on Instagram for you and your audience based on follower activity and post engagement.

According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, Instagram could be changing the current video time limits on their app by allowing users to upload upto hour length videos. Currently their are fairly strict video limits on Instagram, video posts on the main feed are limited to 60 seconds, and Instagram Story videos are limited to 15 seconds. Changing the video limit to up an hour could massively change the type of content users choose to post on their Instagram accounts, the proposed hour long videos are suggested to “focus on vertical video” similar to the format Stories are consumed.

Allowing users to upload and publish content up to an hour long will open up the doors for creatives to introduce new types of content to the platform, and could see Instagram competing with the likes of YouTube for video content. This does’t come as much of a surprise as Instagram’s parent company Facebook have been making big pushes for video content in recent years.  Instagram have reportedly had discussions “in recent weeks” with video publishes and content creators regarding the potential of long video content on the platform.

Instagram are always trialling and beta testing new features, however many of don’t get released for all users, like the Grid Preview feature was was reportedly being beta tested. As The Wall Street Journal described plans for the feature are “tentative” and “subject to change”.

If you want an attention grabbing Instagram feed, try implementing any of these themes on your profile…

With brands valuing their social media profiles as highly as their website, and the rise of mega and micro influencers, it’s becoming more and more of a challenge to stand out from the crowd on Instagram.

It’s important to remember that whenever a user lands on your profile, their initial impression will be the decider in whether they scroll down or click on your individual posts.

Often, planning an Instagram theme is overlooked when building and maintaining a successful account. However, it plays a huge part in helping you grow your following and be successful on Instagram.

Now you’re probably wondering what the secrets are to creating an amazing Instagram feed? Well at Hopper HQ, we work with 10,000+ brands helping them plan and schedule their Instagram feeds, so along the way we’ve gained a heap of expertise on the topic…

Feel like you need to examine your whole strategy before diving into Instagram themes? Take a look at our step-by-step guide:

💡 How To Create A Winning Instagram Marketing Strategy 💡

Instagram Theme #1: Consistent Colour Palette

If you look at many popular accounts, you will notice a similar colour theme across all their content. The colour scheme may gradually change overtime, but the key point here is consistency. A consistent colour palette will automatically present your feed in a cohesive way, and enhance the overall aesthetic of your profile.

See the difference between the two Instagram feeds below — the one on the right is cleaner and more satisfying on the eye, while the one on the left looks messier and inconsistent in comparison:

instagram feed
Random content versus posting in a consistent colour palette.

There are many ways to execute an Instagram colour palette theme, and it doesn’t have to be as disciplined and uniform as Coconut Lane’s above.

You can post content which always contains an element of the same colour, or photos with predominant colours that complement one another:

instagram feed
Instagram feeds that have a consistent aesthetic without being limited to one colour.

This kind of Instagram theme allows you more freedom, as you can use more variety of content and even gradually change the colour palette if you want to.

However you decide to colour co-ordinate your feed, you can be sure that this Instagram theme will help your profile stand out from the crowd and your following will increase as a result!

Instagram Theme #2: Grid Tile Effect

A strategy that a handful of brands and influencers use is creating a larger image or design on their Instagram feed out of their individual posts.

This can be highly impactful when you land on a profile, and definitely encourages users to scroll and explore the content.

The important thing to remember with this Instagram theme, is that the individual posts are still relevant on their own. This way they still make sense in your followers’ feeds if they haven’t yet clicked on your profile.

A great example of this kind of Instagram feed is music festival Kala…

instagram feed
Kala’s creative Instagram feed.

This Instagram theme adds another layer of creativity to your feed, and the possibilities for unique and impressive designs are endless.

Remember, in order to maintain the grid tile pattern, you will always have to post in groups of 3, otherwise the whole design will shift out of place.

A grid tile pattern Instagram theme therefore requires a lot of planning and discipline, so is not for the faint hearted! However it will definitely help you stand out from the crowd.

Instagram Theme #3: White Borders

Another way to create a stand out feed is by placing your photos and videos in white borders or frames to create a pattern.

This became a common trend back when Instagram only supported square posts, as a hack to not have to crop your portrait and landscape posts! Now it is simply a thematic decision to make your Instagram feed look more like a photo album or brochure.

Again there are a number of ways to implement white borders, whether it’s small squares, portrait, landscape, or a mixture…

instagram themes
Zara and Takeawei both utilise white borders to create their Instagram themes.

Instagram Theme #4: Black & White

Consistently posting in monochrome is another way to maintain a cohesive Instagram theme. This is great for photographers and creatives to showcase their work and create a moody theme.

Instagram Theme #5: Flat Lay

Flat lay photography is huge on Instagram, especially in the restaurant world.

Instagram themes don’t just have to be about colours or patterns, but can also be created by using a consistent style of photography.

A flat lay theme is a great option for brands that can photograph their products from above, whether it’s tech, fashion or food. These feeds look engaging, and definitely keep new users scrolling for longer:

Consistent flat lay photography can create a striking Instagram theme.

Instagram Theme #6: Horizontal Lines

Another option is to draw the eye by creating a pattern with horizontal lines across your Instagram feed grid.

We do this on our Instagram account at @hopper_hq, creating rows of different colours while the vertical lines are the same type of post i.e our Spotlight series.

Similar to the grid tile effect, this theme requires you to always post in threes and so requires prior planning and scheduling. But the result is very striking so the extra effort definitely pays off!

Make your feed different by creating a pattern with horizontal lines.

Instagram Theme #7: Vertical Lines

Vertical lines have a similar effect on your Instagram feed. Use to break up different types of content or colours.

This Instagram theme also draws the eye downwards, which naturally encourages scrolling!

Examples of vertical line Instagram themes

Instagram Theme #8: Checkerboard

Similarly, a checkerboard pattern can be made by alternating different types of content! This is great if you publish a lot of text posts, as you can separate the quotes from photographs.

It makes a very striking pattern on your feed, and helps draw attention to certain posts.

You can make use of an Instagram grid planner to perfect this type of theme!

instagram theme
Checkerboard Instagram themes are eye-catching and different.

Plan Your Instagram Theme With A Feed Grid Planner

When it comes to planning your Instagram feed and maintaining a consistent aesthetic, it’s important to know what your feed will look like before you publish your content, so you can ensure:

  • Colour palette cohesion
  • Even variety of content
  • Posts do not clash

Using a grid planner when creating your Instagram theme also carries the advantage of being able to quickly switch the order of your content around in your feed and figure out what looks best.

This is particularly valuable if you are using different content types or colours to create horizontal, vertical or checkerboard patterns.

There were reports of Instagram beta testing their own version of a grid planner, although currently the feature is unconfirmed with Instagram.

However you can use a tool like Hopper HQ Instagram Scheduler that has a grid planner built-in, allowing you to plan what your Instagram feed will look like before you publish your content.

Schedule Your Instagram Feed

Of course one of the most important aspects to planning an Instagram theme is just that, planning!

In order to ensure you have the best looking profile possible, you need to be organised and know exactly what you want your Instagram feed to look like in order to know what content to shoot and how often you’re posting.

Areas of your Instagram marketing strategy will need to be revisited in accordance with your new theme, which is why it’s important to be as organised as possible.

In order to create an attention grabbing Instagram theme, you can no longer post spontaneously or in a rush. It’s therefore necessary to plan and schedule your Instagram posts in advance.

This carries many advantages including better content management, saving heaps of time, and streamlining your workflow. When trying to maintain an Instagram theme, you need a lot of content. Most of the time this will all be managed on desktop, and so being able to manage that in one place and post to Instagram without touching your phone is a life saver.

New Usage Insights Is to Be Added To Instagram To Help Users Monitor How Much Time They Spend In The App

We’re all guilty of spending countless minutes endlessly scrolling through our Instagram feeds, well soon you’ll be able to monitor those minutes and see exactly how much time you’re spending in the app. Code hidden within the Instagram android APK revealed a new feature titled “Usage Insights” which will show users how much time they’re spending in the app.

The feature was discovered by @wongmjane and shared via Twitter

The new Instagram Insights feature was later confirmed by Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom via Twitter with the following words:

We’re building tools that will help the IG community know more about the time they spend on Instagram – any time should be positive and intentional.”

The screenshot above discovered by Jane, also shows a new hamburger icon menu (yet to be confirmed), which also contains a users Saved & Archived posts, as well as a link to “Discover People”.

There has been much talk around the impact apps such as Instagram have on mental health, with several studies suggesting social media having an overall negative effect on mental health. Introduction of features such as Usage Insights could be a reaction from Instagram to help tackle concerns surrounding user behaviour and mental health on the platform. Interestingly last week Google also announced a similar new feature in their latest Android operating system update, which will allow android users to take control over which apps they spend the most time.

No official date has been given for the release of the new Usage Insights feature, and we’re still unsure how the information will be presented. However chances are the update will roll out soon, considering it has been confirmed Kevin Systrom on Twitter.

Unsure of Instagram dimensions and image sizes? Find everything

Over the past few years, Instagram has massively evolved as a platform and stepped away from just square photos!

Now offering a multitude of formats and mediums to share with audiences, content creators have more possibilities than ever to make their profiles stand out. Between all of the different formats and mediums, there’s confusion about what the correct Instagram dimensions are for each type of content.

We’ve created this go-to guide to refer to if you’re ever unsure!

Overview of Instagram Dimensions for 2024

Here is a quick rundown of the different image sizes that you may need to keep an eye on when building your Instagram profile.

Content-TypeDimension
Instagram post1080 x 1080 px
Instagram ad 1080 x 1080 px
Instagram profile photo360 x 360 px
Instagram landscape photo1080 x 608 px
Instagram portrait1080 x 1350 px
Instagram story1080 x 1920 px
IGTV cover photo420 x 654 px
IGTV and Reel video1080 x 1920 px

1) Instagram Dimensions For Profile Photos

First, let’s look at profile pictures, many Instagram users are unaware that the profile picture does have an optimum image resolution. We highly recommend following this to get the most crisp and clear profile picture, as it will have an impact on the aesthetic of your Instagram profile. Now bear in mind the dimensions will be in a square format as per the standard, however, your image will be cropped to fit the circular frame of your profile picture!

What are the Instagram dimensions of profile photos? 320px X 320px (1:1)

instagram profile photo dimensions

2) Instagram Dimensions For Photos and Videos

When Instagram first launched, they pioneered the square image format. However a few years ago they decided to break the mould and allow users to upload both portrait and landscape posts, much to the delight of most users. It’s worth noting no matter what resolution you upload an image, Instagram will automatically resize it to fit the dimensions below. However, uing Hopper HQ you can schedule your photo and video posts to your Instagram account directly from your desktop, without having to use your mobile!

Instagram dimensions of square posts: 1080px X 1080px (1:1)

The original, square photos are the bread and butter of Instagram content. Due to Instagram profiles being made up of equal squares, this is a good dimension to go for if you’d like to avoid unwanted cropping when users view your whole grid.

instagram square post dimensions

Instagram dimensions of portrait posts: 1080px X 1350px (4:5)

The portrait should be a marketers’ favorite dimension, as this content occupies most real estate on users’ screens as they scroll down their feed. If your aim is to grab attention and inspire action, consider using 4:5 ratio but bear in mind the post will appear square when viewing your profile grid.

instagram dimensions portrait post

Instagram dimensions for landscape posts: 1080px X 566px (1.91:1)

Useful for photographers and big group photos, less good for brands due to the small size. Landscape photos are easier to miss as you scroll in feed view.

Simple Post, Story + Reel Scheduling ✨

Visually plan your social content. Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn + Pinterest

it might not be the best idea unless all of your posts are in frames — remember consistency is key!

3) Instagram Dimensions For Stories

Instagram Stories are different from profile posts. They take up the full real estate of your screen rather than just a portion, and only last for 15 seconds. You should utilize this extra real estate with the content you post on your Stories, particularly as you have a short window of viewing time before people tap on it. Check out our full guide to Instagram Stories for business for more tips and content ideas!

In a recent update at the end of 2018, Instagram changed the limits to Story dimensions, now allowing you to zoom and place images and videos from your camera roll like a scrapbook!

The Instagram dimensions of Stories: 1080px X 1920px (9:16)

instagram dimensions stories

Carousel posts work in the same way as regular posts, however, all the photos/videos in the carousel must be the same dimensions! The first photo/video you select will determine the dimensions of the carousel, and all subsequent photos/videos will be cropped accordingly! This is important to bear in mind when uploading carousel posts to Instagram.

5) Instagram Dimensions For Ads

Ads are no different to normal posts in terms of Instagram dimensions, with square, portrait, landscape and Story content being available to turn into a paid ad. However, we would recommend using portrait content, as this will take up the most screen real estate when your target audience is scrolling through their feed, giving the ad more chance of being noticed!

The right Instagram dimension for ads is: 1080 x 1080 px

6) Instagram Dimensions For IGTV

Launched in 2018, IGTV was a big step into the vertical video space for Instagram, introducing a new form of content for brands, influencers, and creators. IGTV videos can be between 15 seconds – 10 minutes at 650MB or less, with verified accounts being privy to the hour long feature video at up to 3.6GB

Instagram dimensions for IGTV are the same as Instagram Stories 1080px X 1920px (9:16) as they fill the whole screen. They require a minimum frame rate of 30 frames per second and min resolution of 720px. All IGTV content must also be in MP4 file format.

The Instagram dimensions for IGTV cover photos: 420px X 654px (1:1.55)

The recommended aspect ratio for Instagram reels is 9:16 and the recommended size is 1080 x 1920 pixels.

Reels are full vertical videos, so it’s best to follow the recommended Instagram reel size when uploading video footage from your gallery to avoid reels being automatically cropped. When recording directly from the Instagram reel screen, the size is set by default, so you do not need to worry about resizing.

The Instagram Dimensions for Reels is 1080 x 1920 px

What if I want to post a photo/video that does not fit Instagram’s dimensions?

Sometimes, you might wish to post content to Instagram outside of these dimensions, for example, a full-screen 9:16 image taken on Stories or Snapchat. If you do not want to compromise the photo by cropping it to Instagram dimensions, you can put it in a square frame using a number of photo editing apps.

For this example, I used Afterlight. However, almost any mobile photo editor will have this feature or one similar!

Once you place it in a square frame you can upload to Instagram without cropping! However, bear in mind if using this trick that the frames will affect how your Instagram grid looks when viewing your profile as a whole. If you’re trying to achieve a cohesive grid theme or feed aesthetic

Instagram is one of many tools used by PR and Social Agencies, not just for their clients campaigns, but also as a channel of their own. We analysed the activity of the UK’s biggest PR agencies to look at how effectively they use Instagram, and the results were surprising!

We compared PR agencies using a number of different factors, including engagement rates and follower growth to determine which agency was performing the best on Instagram, and the results were quite astonishing. Most people within the PR and marketing sphere will know that Edelman is one of, if not the, biggest PR agency in the UK – however, surprisingly, our research put Purple PR and Exposure London at the top of the list, ahead of PR agency giants Edelman and Ketchum.

Purple PR had the highest number of followers by some margin, as well as gaining more than 7,277 likes over the last 30 days. Exposure London gained 2,572 likes during this period, whilst Edelman received just 437 likes. Ketchum, who sit at fourth on the list, received 1,143 likes in the last month.

Of the top five, W Communications came out on top in terms of engagement rate, with 2.45%, followed by Exposure London with 1.18% and Ketchum 0.64%. Purple PR was ranked fourth with a rate of 0.42%, and Edelman was surprisingly the lowest from the top five with an engagement rate of just 0.04%.

Getting hight engagement rates is increasingly important on social media, especially with Instagram’s frequent algorithm changes. Engagement rates give you a true measure of how your followers are reacting to your content. You could have thousands of followers, but if the content your posting isn’t right for them, you’ll lose favour. Engagement gives you an idea of the percentage of your followers who are actually switched on to the content you’re posting. Purple PR, for instance, has a very defined audience, posting regularly about fashion and celebrities, whereas Edelman tend to post solely about work related topics.

An important insight we can draw from our research, (and one that is off-repeated) is having a defined and pre-determined target audience, and created your content based around them is key to running a successful social media account – something which Purple PR have clearly been doing very well.

The research was conducted between the 24th December to the 23rd January using the Hopper HQ Instagram Analytics Tool, on 50 of the UK’s highest revenue PR agencies, using our new Instagram analytics tool, which is currently being rolled out across Hopper HQ!

PR agencies pride themselves on their ability to get in front of an audience and their creative flair– so it’s interesting to see how they perform on Instagram, which shares many of the elements that make a PR agency great; creativity, reach, impressions etc.

Edelman is widely considered the biggest PR and social media agency in the UK and it was surprising to see that both Purple PR and Exposure London trumped them. I think the rise of Instagram over the last few years has forced PR pros to evolve with the social media terrain – however, it’s clear that in some cases, more time is spent on their client’s social feeds than their own.

This isn’t the first time a brand has been chastised on social media for poor marketing choices; in 2017 a we witnessed Unilever’s personal care brand Dove face the outrage of consumers over an online campaign, earlier that year we also saw soft drink producer Pepsico fall under scrutiny for an advert featuring Kendall Jenner at a social justice protest. We’re now in 2018 and would have hoped that other brands took lessons from the mistakes of their peers, well it seems not..

High street fashion retailer H&M have come under fire for a product advertisement featuring a hoodie with the slogan “Coolest monkey in the jungle” modelled by a black child. The advert sparked huge backlash on social media, with many labelling the advert as racist, inappropriate and distasteful.

The social media outrage snowballed and caught headline news very quickly, garnering criticism from consumers, industry experts and celebrities, most notably chart topping musicians The Weeknd and G-Eazy expressed distaste towards the advertisement via social media, with both musicians cancelling their partnerships with the fashion brand.

Facing much pressure H&M issued a statement via their Instagram account-@hm apologising for the decision surrounding the product advertisement and accepting responsibility for the oversight, followed by another apology the following day, reiterating their stance on the issues, and apologising again. Since then, the product which originally appeared on their UK site, has been removed.

‘Lapse in judgement or obvious ignorance’

Besides the lapse in judgement or obvious ignorance from H&M, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen egalitarian consumers take to Twitter & Instagram to voice their dissent against a multinational company. We’re again reminded of a more broader theme; the power of social media as a vessel of influence.

Interestingly, rather than an official press release or press conference, H&M chose to address the issue and apologise via their Instagram account.  Their intent may have been to dilute the situation using the same channels that escalated the uproar, however after analysing the Instagram post using Hopper HQ’s analytics tool I discovered a rather interesting byproduct of this whole debacle.

Data from Hopper HQ’s analytics tool shows the original apology note posted by H&M on their Instagram account has amassed over 311k likes and 62k comments, giving the post the highest engagement across all of their posts with an official engagement rate of 1.55%, ranking it as the top post ever published to by H&M.

Engagement rate = (Likes+Comments/Followers)

h&m instagram engagementh&m instagram engagement(Data from Hopper HQ Analytics Tool)

The second apology note posted by H&M also got a significant amount of likes and comments (229k likes and 41k comments), again ranking it with H&Ms all time top posts with an engagement rate of 1.12%. Among other highly engaged posts on the account was a product advertisement with an engagement rate of 1.21%, posted a day before the apology note, this potentially suggests the engagement on the apology note had a correlating affect on the product advertisement post. H&M haven’t posted anything on Instagram since and despite all of the negative press, H&M attained more followers, with a follower growth of over 44k (at the time of writing this article).

h&m instagram engagement

Could this be a silver lining for H&M? A typed up apology note receiving the highest engagement rate against high quality content is quite the feat, even at the expense of a PR catastrophe. However, before any other brands reading this decide to take a leaf out of H&M’s marketing misdemeanor to capitalise on social media gains, we must raise this impending question…

If we draw a parallel… a hot topic for debate in the PR industry circles around the question “Is all publicity good publicity?” Similarly in the millennial age of social media, a question we must ask ourselves as social media marketers; are engagement rates always positive? In this specific instance, scanning over the comments on H&M’s post, we can see that the sentiments are mostly negative with few people defending the fashion retailer. Social media marketers and agencies have always used engagement rates as a positive indication of performance, and well rightly so, I mean the more likes and comments you receive the better you’re performing right? Well I guess not anymore, especially for the poor individual presenting social media KPI’s at H&M’s next marketing meeting.

Throughout 2018, Instagram made some huge changes and upgrades to everyone’s favourite social media app. We were spoilt with tonnes of new updates, including the much anticipated shoppable posts, GIFS in Stories, the ability to mute accounts, add hashtags and mentions to your bio,  and share posts and Stories to your Story, to name a few! As well as the welcome updates we also saw new Instagram trends taking over the platform: Stories stepped up to become a marketing necessity, Instagram added more and more ways for brands to communicate with their audience, and the influencer space because worth even more. With the vast amount of updates and Instagram trends that accumulated over the last year, we’re expecting really exciting things for the year ahead, so here are out top predictions fior Instagram trends in 2019…

#1 Stories Dominate Organic Posting

Instagram’s disaster update in Dec 2018 saw a complete overhaul of the interface — where you viewed posts in your feed as you would a Story. This caused outrage across the internet, and Instagram quickly retreated back to the normal UI claiming it to be a ‘mistake’. People don’t like change, and this time Instagram listened to their users. However, their intentions with that update were clear, and we think they’ll be back at the drawing board now thinking how to do it differently…

This is perhaps the single trend that will change everything for Instagram. We’ve seen how Stories grew in popularity the past few years, and most of Instagram’s updates in recent months have been adding to Stories: polls, questions, music, countdown, focus mode, the list goes on. Many users are already adopting this feature as their primary way of sharing content, with their main feed being secondary — more of a homepage to garner the interests of passers by — the content on their main feed is more thought out, strategic and planned, with Stories giving a behind the scenes more personal insight. We think 2019 will be the year Instagram somehow prioritise Stories over the classic feed.

#2 Direct Goes Solo

We have our bets of Instagram Direct becoming a standalone app. Now this has been rumoured for a while now, with some reports of a beta version in a few select regions. However we predict this will finally come into fruition at some point in 2019. Our hunch is based on two truths: firstly Instagram has been following the Facebook blueprint for a while now, with the introduction of an algorithmic feed, to adding live video. What we now use as ‘Messenger’ was originally ‘Facebook Messenger’, but the social media giants decided to separate it as its own app. The second truth behind our prediction is the heavy rivalry between Instagram and Snapchat. Both platforms are titans in the social media space, and in recent years we have seen Instagram mirror some of Snapchats features in order to push them out the playground. We don’t know when Direct will be launched, but it’s high up on our list of things to come this year.

Plan & schedule social media ahead of time.

#3 IGTV Will Blow Up

When IGTV launched in June 2018, it didn’t have as quicker uptake as Instagram anticipated. This is surprising, as the vertical format make it easier for creators to make content, and for users to watch it easily on their phone. However, behavioural change takes time, and only around the end of the year were the big brands and influencers really in the swing of using IGTV. Yet Instagram remains one of the only social networks where photos still outperform videos. We think this will change in 2019 — vertical video will come into its own, with more brands and public figures publishing long-form content and more users habitually checking IGTV. This could well coincide with the change in interface, as Stories and IGTV have the same dimensions. Marketing teams should brace themselves for this shift, and get into the habit of creating vertical video sooner rather than later!

#4 360° Photos

Now here’s our wildcard Instagram trend for 2019 and that is virtual reality! How you wonder? Well VR has been dubbed as the next big thing in tech for a long time, however techies are struggling to find a way to implement it AND make it accessible to everyone in a consumable way. We’ve seen Facebook attempt to do so with 360 photos, improving the way we share experience with our friends. We predict Instagram could well be following its big brothers footsteps again, and introduce some format of 360 photo or video this year. We’re not entirely sure if and how Instagram plan to implement some form of VR into their world, but we’ve seen them dabble with Augmented Reality much like rivals Snapchat, so it will be interesting to see if they step into the space!

#5 Brands Will Communicate With Their Audience More Than Ever

The introduction of Story features such as polls,  questions and emoji reactions allows brands and influencers to interact with their audience on a whole new level to before. Followers feel like their opinion matters, and businesses have used such stickers to gage customer feedback and give their customers involvement in product decisions. Our prediction for 2019 is that this will become a huge trend – Instagram will release even more features allowing conversations to take place between brand and consumer, and more brands will utilise the stickers to increase brand loyalty!
